Hi I will help with your problem Please do not rate until all your questions are answered that way you wont have to pay twice Use reply to expert link.
Good morning I need a couple questions answered first, and then I will explain what to do,so bare with me.
First on your pump drive is it a key way or spline were it goes through gear on engine?
next on your new or rebuilt pump there should be a scratch line on the front of pump[on top in between the two mounting bolts] were it meets the front cover and there should be a mark on front cover were the pump meets cover, do you see the lines I'm talking about?
Next look on your harmonic balance r and see if there is a timing tab on cover and notches on dampener[or timing marks 0-15dagrees].
last thing the pumps usually comes set up for #1 cylinder they mite have a timming pin in it to hold at #1 does yours have that timing pin installed?
Customer
pump has slotted keyway there is i scratch line at about 2o'clock on rebuilt pump but no mark on housing where it bolts fast. the guy i'm fixing it for put the rebuilt pump on without setting anything on tractor and tried to start it, so i'm assuming there was no pin installed. so the rebuilt has been turned over on tractor, will this screw up pump or can i pull it off and set engine on #1 cylinder(is that the front or rear cylinder) tdc and refasten pump
B back in 5 min have to use restroom hold on
Customer
ok
Im back did you find marks on dampener? And no it will not screw up pump I will explain after you let me know about timing marks they are either on front at crank pulley or on fly wheel I just want you to understand what I say so we are getting these little things out of the way first,so you know what I'm talking about
Customer

i'm not where the tractor is but i did see marks on front dampner

Thank you for the info now we can start.
First if valve cover is not removed we need to get to #1 cylinder to check TDCC. top dead center of the compression stroke.
Next you can leave pump on while doing this that way there is no chance the drive gear gets out of time.
Bar engine over and line up mark on pulley to #1 check for valves being closed on #1 cylinder [you will be able to turn push rods with your fingers they should be loose } if they are loose great if not bar engine over 1 revolution and line up mark, now they should be loose that will put engine at TDCC. Pull pump check gear to make sure there is no damage to drive portion were key way goes in.
Then on front of pump or on left side off pump will be a plug that gets removed so you can turn pump shaft to line up camshaft in pump to #1 there is a slot that pin falls into on pump cam to put on tdcc [u can use a bolt that will fit the hole for timing purposes just do not leave in take out rite after it drops down if left in and you turn pump and the bolt brakes it will damage the pump and pump will have to come apart to remove }.
Next install pump you should be able to see marks on pump or cover to line back up like it was from new by painted portion,if you can't tell were it was put it as close as you think if it won't run get timing off of valve cover and estimate how many degrees to line up pump.If you have any follow up questions even after you rate my answer you can always come back to same link to answer follow up questions good luck and have a great day spanky
Hope your still there one more suggestion while doing other work take some paint remover and spray or wipe on were the timing mark should be on front cover, when the pump gets put on from factory they do mark it so let paint remover work wipe with rags not scrape because you mite make your own marks keep putting on paint remover and wiping away until you see marks
Please rate my answer informative or better so I will get paid it will not cost you any more money you already paid but I did not get paid and won't until you rate my answer thank you spanky
