Acura TL: 2000 Acura TL with 140,000 miles. Very recently

Customer Question

2000 Acura TL with 140,000 miles. Very recently (over just a couple of days), trans slips at times from a dead stop. Trouble getting up to speed, then downshifts hard on its own. Does this a couple of times and then seems to settle into a lower gear even though I am in D5 (which is blinking). Runs at about 4,000 rpm at 40mph for a few miles as I "babied" it to the closest AAMCO shop. Also, engine light is no and TCL light as well.
I was hoping this was a solenoid/electrical problem. However, AAMCO said codes show some electrical and some mechanical. Mentioned shift solenoid and some mis-fires codes as well. Talking about $1800 for transmission work.
One final note, my teenagers just told me that it has occassionally slipped from a dead stop over the last few weeks (would have been good to find this out then).

do you remember what the transmission codes were - P0740, P0730, P0890 perhaps?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Now that I have researched a little, I will call them in the morning to see exactly what codes they show.

Expert:  Eric replied 4 years ago.

Ok, let me know what the codes are and I can let you know what should be done to repair it

Ok, I was afraid it would be those codes.

the problem is that this transmission has an internal transmission filter that cannot be serviced without pulling the transmission. Due to this, sediment, debris from band/clutch pack wear clogs the filter over time, which damages the valve body, the torque converter, as well as the pump and other internal transmission parts.

There is only one repair for this and that is to replace the transmission. Replacing just the solenoids is both a waste of time and waster of your money as it will not resolve this.

This was such a problem that Acura/Honda extended the warranty to 7yrs 93,000 miles on the transmission.

I understand that this is not what you were hoping to hear, but to tell you anything else would simply be untrue.
