1. Which of the following sentences contains an italicized word that's used as a predicate adjective?
D. Jerry looks ill today.

2. In which sentence are the conjunctions used correctly?
A. Neither beauty nor popularity was considered in the contest.

3. Which sentence below contains a correctly used modifier in italics?
D. He spoke sharply to his sister.

4. Choose the simple subject in the following sentence. The tallest contestant won the prize.
C. contestant

5. Which one of the following sentences demonstrates correct subject-verb agreement?

In MY OPINION, this is the best answer:
D. A number of my friends have bought new cars recently.

However, your teacher may be looking for answer A.

The reason is that in D, the word "number" is singular, and seems to "disagree" with the plural verb "have". However, in practice, words of grouping can sometimes (but not always) correctly agree with plural verbs.

In answer A, there are two verbs, "thinks" and "are". "thinks" does agree with its subject, and it's the main verb of the sentence. "are" does not (in my opinion) agree with its subject, because "five dollars" is a mass noun and should take a singular verb, even though it has a plural form.

So I think D is the best answer, but your teacher may disagree.
