Geology Tutor - from Shontel- HOW MUCH?
Please help with Week 8 Discussion 1

Post your response to the following: Geologic events, such as volcanic activity, play an important role in forming many of our valuable resources, such as fossil fuel, lead, copper, and gold. For example, fig. 15.21 on p. 476 of the text shows the role of basaltic magma in forming one of the most valuable ores to our civilization, chromium. Select an important ore mined in your state or region, and discuss how geologic events played a role in forming this ore. Discuss the importance of this ore in the economy of your selected area and the U.S. as a whole.

AND DISCUSSION 2

Post your response to the following: Discuss a nonrenewable resource that you think will have the most significant effect to our lives if it is depleted. Explain your choice. Are there current efforts to conserve it? Provide an example of a person, place, or thing that utilizes a renewable resource

price? Also, I'm reminding you the final is due next week.

For my final project, I chose the state of Arizona. A popular geological feature in this state is the Grand Canyon. The three major rock types the Grand Canyon consists of is sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic.

For the 2 discussion questions, it will be $20. Thanks!

Discussion Question 1

The state of Arizona produced more copper than any other state in the United States in 2007 and produced 63% of the country's copper (USGS, 2010). Copper mining is an important part of the economy of both the state and country. There was a shortage of copper production in 2007, driven by Chinese demand, so the price of copper went up significantly. The total production value of copper for that year reached $7.58 billion (USGS, 2010). The copper ore deposits are hydrothermal deposits. Geothermally heated water has copper in solution. As it moves through the rocks, it deposits the metal in the rock. Copper is used for many thing such as power transmission wire and cable, motor wiring, electronic wiring, plumbing, and electronic circuitry.

Discussion Question 2

Even though water is considered a renewable resource, I really feel that freshwater, or potable water, is a nonrenewable resource that would have a significant impact on our lives if it is depleted. Because freshwater is used for not only our drinking water but for irrigating crops and other uses, it is essential to our lives. There are many efforts to conserve freshwater resources. These include using alternatives such as reclaimed water for irrigation and placing restrictions on lawn watering. There are also devices that can be used in the home to reduce how much water is used. One renewable water resource is reclaimed water that is essentially treated wastewater that can be used for irrigation. Golf courses, notorious users of water, can use reclaimed water instead of potable water.
