I would like to know if it is possible to be married to a woman in Colombia with paperwork alone, meaning in the civil department can I get married to this woman even though I am not present and reside in the US?
Already Tried: Not Much!
Dear JA Customer, this is called "marriage by proxy" and it exists is Colombia, however only four states allow this in the US: California, Colorado, Texas and Montana. In most of the cases there are strict rules and the circle of applicants is limited to the members of armed force. Texas is the least strict, so if You are not the member of the armed force, You should start the process there (at the county clerk's office). You will get a form, which the other party must fill in (lot of questions). And her documents must be counter-signed by an US Notary (she must visit the American Embassy in Bogotá). So, Your first step should be to contact a county clerk's office in Texas and they will help You.Have a nice day!
Thanks for the information and it sounds like I will need to try another route. If I were to travel back to Colombia and marry the woman of my dreams how long does it take after the civil approval of the marriage at a notary before she can be approved a visa and entrance into the US as my wife?
