Check engine light says fuel running. Tech says it's fuel

Customer Question

Check engine light says fuel running rich. Tech says it's fuel filter, fuel pump, or mass air flow sensor. It's a 2003 VW turbo with 171k and I do not know when fuel filter was last, if ever, replaced. It's a very easy place to start in getting engine light to turn off. I wanted to just replace the fuel filter so I have a baseline of when it was last replaced. Your description offered a key point I was looking for, pulling the fuse to release pressure. Any tips, thoughts? Is a turbo supposed to get 22 mph instead of 32mph?
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: On for extended periods. It has been on and off for past 3 weeks. Again, for several days or most of a tank it's on, or off, then comes back. Same error code each time I have had it checked.
JA: Are you fixing your Turbo yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Have tried nothing but monitoring, premium fuel, mid grade fuel fill ups, and checking code twice over 3 weeks.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I did put in lucas fuel injector cleaner in gas tank about a month ago. It ran rich for a couple of tanks of gas, light came on, then went off for a couple of tanks, then back off for a tank, now back on again.

If you have a 1.8T, you will first need to make sure that you dont have any blown charge air hoses. If not then replace MAF

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Yeah, I had read that MAF was common issue. How can I tell if hoses are blown? Sound, bubbles?
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

you will be able to hear the hissing, you can also spray carb cleaner on the ends to hear it.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
A strong, loud hissing?
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

yep

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Only while engine is on? No hissing after engine off?
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

correct

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
No hissing but not in a spot to check visual. Assume for moment, no blown hiss means no blown charge hose.
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

correct. replace the MAF

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Is it advisable to check fuel filter for age and replace? It's 171k and 2nd owner.
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

if you want. it sure wont hurt.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Any tips on replacing MAF?
The tip on pulling fuse 28 and using finger pressure on fuel filter clip was very precise, helpful.
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.

just be very careful that thing is extremely sensitive. should have 2 torx screws to remove the old one.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.

Rockauto says to first clean mafs with a maf cleaner and see if that fixes issue. Is there a special electronics cleaner for mafs?
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Would rubbing alcohol work to clean the maf connections?
Expert:  david craig replied 2 months ago.
