I have to manual shift my 01 beetle 1.9 turbo diesel because

I have to manual shift my 01 beetle 1.9 turbo diesel because it won't down shift to 1st when I come to a stop, plus it won't shift in to high gear, it stays in 3rd is it my tranny control unit that's causing this? Reginald Britt
JA: Are you fixing your Beetle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes I am and I took the battery a lose hoping it would reset itself
JA: Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter? And can you see if it's leaking or not?
Customer: its not leaking and battery is good
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Are all of the gears backlighted on the PRND display in the dash? Meaning, instead of the one you select having a black box around it, they ALL have a black background? If so, you should have stored faults in the TCM. Your best bet is going to be to scan the fault memory, otherwise we are just guessing. Stuck in 3rd gear is "limp home mode" and indicates an electrical fault.
