Customer Question

I have a 2004 jetta. Bbw engine. Wouldn't start last week. Rented a code scanner and all it said was ignition coil. Changed the coil and still wouldn't start. The car cranks fine just won't start. Changed the fuel pump. Checked the relay. Its getting spark.
JA: How many miles are on the car? Has the car been starting normally?
Customer: 149000 and its been fine until last week
JA: Are you fixing your Jetta yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Always fix my own. Changed the fuel pump changed the coil checked spark check fuel pump relay
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Checked fuses.

Hello, Welcome to Just Answer.

This is just a idea I might be wrong. Does the camshaft turn when you crank the engine? The cambelt might be striped/broken

Greetings,

Martin.

How would I check that
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

Take the top cover off and crank the engine

Hi,

Sorry I mean the cover over the belt.

Plastic cover or valve cover. How can I tell if fuel is making it to the engine?
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

The cover directly over the belt not the valve cover. You can feel the fuel flow on the rubber parts of the fuel lines next to the valve cover. You will need a pressure gauge to see if the fuel pressure is good. The fuel pressure is 21 bar at the pipe where it split to the injectors.

Martin.

I disconnected the line from the fuel rail and cranked it and didn't get fuel.
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

Then your fuel pump is not working or not pumping fuel.

Martin

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Could it be the filter. I'm hearing the pump
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

The filter can be bad but will not stop the fuel flow completely.

Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

There is a lift pump inside the fuel tank. This pump only supply the big pump maybe that is the fault. The fuel is not supplied to the pump.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Ok I say I hear the pump but it's not like any other pump. Its pretty quiet and seems to only activate when the car is cranking. To where as every other pump I've listened to primes when the key is in the on position. But when I stop cranking I hear it for a couple seconds.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I don't see another pump listed on any parts websites. Does the fuel pump prime on its own.
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

That would be the correct way for the pump to work. The small pump is part and parcel of the fuel tank gauge sender unit. the small pump prime the big pump.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Where is that pump located
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

The pump is inside the fuel tank bolted onto the tank sender unit.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I replaced that pump. Is another
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

No it only have two pumps

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I only see one
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Where is this other pump. Can you direct me to a diagram
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

if you have a pump as the one on this site than your car has the new tech with only one pump

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
That link shows 2 different pumps. Mine is the one with the bolt on metal cover for the metal tank.
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
That other pump shown is for the plastic tanks.
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

They are the same just the mountings are not the same. Both are a high pressure fuel pump.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
What about the crank sensor. Or maybe a security lock out of some kind
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

Then you will have no spark.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Ok the 1 and only fuel pump is working but there is no fuel making it to the rail. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator. This car has the filter and regulator combo in the tank. This is a terrible design. Vw should be ashamed of how hard they made this car to service.
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

I am just thinking have you perhaps made a mistake by switching the two fuel pipes around. The one is a supply pipe line and the other is a return overflow line.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
I have the bbw motor. It has a different fuel system. There is only one line that serves as the supply and return. The regulator is part of the fuel filter. It isn't a very common set up.
Expert:  Martin replied 8 months ago.

Hi,

I found this video where the guy install the fuel pump and filter. The return fuel line is in the tank and one can misplace them..
