Running hot. very sudden (yesterday, mid day 70 degrees

Customer Question

running hot. very sudden (yesterday, mid day 70 degrees cruising at 50 mph) temp gauge spiked and warning chime sounded.. Passenger side fan working. all fuses good, no/minimal heat blowing when heat is set to max. Water pump failure?
JA: Do all the fuses have the correct amperage for the circuits they're in?
Customer: 25 amp in the passenger compartment fuse block. Battery fuses are all the same and look original (no amp print that I noticed)
JA: What is the model of your '70 VW?
Customer: It's a 2004 Jetta 1.8T
JA: Are you fixing your Jetta yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: If it's a relatively simple fix - yes. I've checked fuses, cleaned fan fuses and connections on top of the battery box. Haven't dug much deeper yet.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: nothing else that I can think of, thanks

Is the cooling system full?

Have you checked the thermostat?

Does the coolant circulate when the engine is running?
