Customer Question

CEL. Flashing then to constant on 05.5 jetta. Coils and plugs are new.
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: About a month ago it was blinking and driving rough and misfiring. I changed all 5 plugs and coils. Today it flashed fir about 20 seconds and then went constant and is still on.
JA: Are you fixing your Jetta yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Just those and it was fine....then it happened one other time so i cleaned the MAF. It has had the O2 replaced as well. I was guessing an air issue. It does have an aftermarket turbo so i replaced the air filter on the short ram too.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I dont think so.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

These are misfire codes for the number 3 and 5 cylinders. The engine light is flashing because of a severe misfire.

Did the symptoms start after the spark plugs were replaced?

What was the brand and part number of spark plug used?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
There was a major misfire about 2 months ago...car shaking etc. Then i replaced all plugs and coils. This time there is no shaking. Plugs are autolite not sure of part number.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Im guessing i may need a higher quality/performance plug?
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Those could definitely be causing the misfire. The factory part number is###-##-####which are NGK PZFR5J-11. These are the plugs that should be used.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Ok i will pick some of those up. I was subjected to what was available at the time.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

I hope that takes care of it!

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
It didnt. Its not as bad but it still does it.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Were any issues such as fouling or physical damage found on the plugs that were removed?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
They dont look too horrible.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
no i dont believe so.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Have you cleared the codes and drove it again to see what sets again?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I did drive it got flashing CEL but it went out after instead if staying on. I have not had the codes read.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Let's see what codes are currently setting then and go from there.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Had it read again and now just p0305. So misfire cyl 5.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Can you check the coil driver and injector pulse on number 5?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Not on my own.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

That will be the next step. A compression test may be necessary from there if both are ok.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I have my own code reader now and p0171 and p0068 are there in addition to p0300 p0303 p0305
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

Was the number 5 coil or injector driver tested?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Not yet. I was wondering about an air issue. It only missed at 70 plus at higher rpm. Appears fine while stopped.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

It looks like you have a couple issues going on. The P0171 and P0068 could be setting because of a vacuum leak or inaccurate MAF sensor, but may not be related to the misfires.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Ah ok. I might need to visit a garage.
Expert:  sprinkles08 replied 2 months ago.

It's going to take some testing to determine what is going on. Checking for vacuum leaks, monitoring data, a static and running compression test, checking the injector and coil drivers may be necessary.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Ok thx
