Hi Im David, is the check engine light on while the vehicle is running?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
No
Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

ok. these beetles have extensive issues with the crank shaft position sensors. I have fixed numerous bugs by replacing this. I have also had success replacing the fuel filter on a few, but only after the vehicle failed a fuel pressure test.

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Ok, I'll try that
Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

please let me know the results. good luck to you.

Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

if you are sitting there at idle, will it continue to run ok no matter how long its running?

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
No, it will run about one minute
Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

oh ok, that makes a difference. thought it was just while driving

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Then restart, and run again, repeat and same result
Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

first thing you're going to need to do is clean out the throttle body, idle air control valve and egr valve, then a vacuum leak test. then we can go from there.

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
Lol, why don't I just blow the dern thing up?
Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

i sell tnt for very cheap........

Expert:  david craig replied 9 months ago.

seriously though. the first thing i do for engine performance problems is go by a documented history of problems for that model. the crank sensor is a known problem for these cars. then i recommend a total cleaning of everything in the airflow intake of the engine. those components i mentioned get carbon build up in there passages and will absolutely cause these type of issues. they need to be cleaned good. including the passages on the intake where they mount to.
