Customer Question

Can not find the fuse for the left low beam headlight on a 2006 VW Passat 3.6
JA: Have you checked the fuse number? Does the fuse have the correct amperage for the circuit it's in? Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: The owners manual says it is number 5. there is nothing in slot 5
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: nope
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the VW Mechanic about your situation and then connect you two.

Thanks for choosing Just Answer . I'm Wolfgang here to help!!

I am confident we can resolve your problem together. Please
understand that I don't know your skill level. In most cases when you have a problem
with the way the vehicle performs, specialized tooling is required to acquire computer
data/information or engine testing results. We didn’t build these complicated vehicles; we
just diagnose and fix them. Also understand that I can't see, smell, hear, or touch the
vehicle either, so it may take a few replies to get to satisfactory results. I am also going to
direct you with the fastest, easiest and most common things to check first. Please be
patient and permit me to do what I do best.
I also try to give all of the information you may need, expecting a “positive rating” in
return. I will also continue assisting you after you have rated me, if necessary. If there
is any reason I cannot get a positive rating, please let me know why “in advance”, so I
can go another direction for you. I am sorry you’re having this problem; I’ll help you
through it.
Below is my first answer or request for more information. If you do not understand it, or you need more information from me, or need me to go in more detail.

I DO NEED A VIN # ***** ASSIST YOU ON YOUR ISSUE !!

THANKS

OK IS THERE ANY MESSAGE ON THE DASH AT ALL FOR IMMOBILIZER OR STEERING WHEEL DEFECTIVE?

IS THE BATTERY DEAD?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Battery is not dead. The car starts and then shuts off right away. I didn't notice an immobilizer symbol, I'll have to check again in the morning. There is a picture of the steering wheel on the panel. It almost seems like a anti theft feature was enacted.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Ok, here is what i found under the hood.
F4 - nothing in that spot, put in a 5A still nothing.
F10 - is a 5A, not a 10A. replaced with 10A, no change.
F16 - nothing
F17 - nothing
F23 - is a 5A, not a 10A. replaced with 10A, no change
I have no fuse positions higher than F46.I was just informed that my neighbor, who is helping me, pulled fuses while the key was engaged. Can that be part of my problem?
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

did you try to start the car any difference?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
No. Battery just died however since I couldn't get the key out. Will have to charge the battery for your next suggestion.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Correct, still starts and then shuts off. Key (push type key) still will not come out of ignition. Checking this list of fuses now. Update you shortly.
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Checked, all in place.
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I just had the battery tested and it is good. Are we at the point where a phone call would be more beneficial?
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

ok with the key on is there any flashing lights??

do you have a scan tool like VCDS?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
There is a symbol for a steering wheel, engine and the letters EPC. I do not have the specific devise you are talking about but I can go to the local auto parts store and use the computer that tells you what codes are.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

is that all that comes on and what color is the steering wheel? is there any other lights on? The parts store code reader may not get all codes stored so that is why VCDS is needed!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Steering wheel, engine and EPC are all yellow. In the information center there is a red ! And a red symbol for the cruise control.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

was there any spillage of a soft dring or coffee in the shifter area?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
No sir!
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

a scan is needed . too many variables on this . i would do a phone call but at this time more info is needed!! i'm trying to be fair on this!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I appreciate it. Let me see what i can do about the scan. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

sure !!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
A couple of thoughts until i can get it scanned. Is it possible that the battery in the key is bad from being in the ignition while checking the fuses? If so, is there a way to get the key out of the ignition by taking it (the key) apart?
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

no i do think a bigger issue here the key is only for the door opening and closing . the immobilizer is just a radioactive pill. something big is going on!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
The immobilizer symbol is NOT on. Does that make things any better?
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Also the steering wheel is NOT locked.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

OK DOES IT START AND RUN? AND KEEP RUNNING?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
It just starts and then shuts off.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

ok can you do me this with the ignition on can you take a pic of the instrument cluster for me to see what you are seeing. does the immo symbol come on when you push the key in and then goes off?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
sorry it took so long to get back. Had to take my daughter to her college orientation. Let me know if the files did not come with this email. There is no immo symbol at any time.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

OK YOU HAVE A TRANSMISSION FAULT BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE GEARS ARE SELECTED. A SCAN TEST IS NEEDED FROM VAG COM TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
ok, here is where we are. I found that the F16 fuse under the hood was out of place. After correcting that, the vehicle started and the key came out of the ignition. All of the same lights were on. Eventually the ones for the PRNDS corrected them selves. All others still on.
I hooked up a scanner and this is what is showing.
P0501 - Vehicle Speed Sensor. "A" Range AAPerformance
G/E: Generic DTC/Enhanced DTC
Pending: The DTC is a Pending code
MIL: the status of the Malfunction Indicator LampP0864 - TCM Communication Circuit Range/Performance
All other info is the same as the P0501 code.Should the other lights go out with time as the car runs? Remember these came on after fuses were pulled. I seriously doubt that there is a mechanical problem.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

clear all faults and see if all lights out!!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Before I clear the codes, I took the car for a ride there were a couple of things, first, the gas gauge moves with the car. As I accelerated, the tank would go to empty. Was the accelerating stopped or the brakes were applied the gas gauge would go back to wear it should be. Next, the EPC light would go out and then come back on. The "Brake" light would do these me thing. Finally, the speedometer stopped working briefly and then came back. Should I still try clearing the codes?
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

JOT ALL CODES DOWN . CLEAR AND THEN ROAD TEST AGAIN TO SEE WHAT COMES BACK!!

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
ok, so i cleared the codes. Nothing happened, all lights stayed on. Drove the car for about 10 minutes, still nothing. Then i turned the car off , restarted it and the yellow steering wheel, yellow engine, yellow EPC and red battery light were gone .ABS and traction control are still on. Yellow steering wheel and yellow EPC continue to come on. Then i restart the car and they are off. So it seems that every other time i start the car, the lights come back. When these lights are not on, the car drives perfectly. When the lights are on, steering is stiff and shifting (automatic) is not quite the same.
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
What about the fuses for the right side of the dash, do you have information for them?
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

were you messing with them? i do believe that you really need VCDS . THE PART STORE SCAN TOOL WILL NOT CLEAR THE OTHER LIGHTS RIGHT AWAY!!

LETS TRY THIS UNHOOK THE BATTERY (BOTH CABLES ) TOUCH AND HOLD THE CABLES FOR 5 MINUTES THEN HOOK THE CABLES UP THEN START THE CAR AND DRIVE . WHAT LIGHTS ARE STILL ON AFTER THE TEST DRIVE?

THANKS

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I did not mess with the fuses on the right side. However the person that was helping me, may have. I haven't spoken with him since i found out he messed with my other fuses.
I did the think with the battery, it kind of took things backwards. All of the lights for the transmission PRNDS came back on. Still have the yellow steering wheel, yellow engine and yellow EPC. Still have ABS and the traction control symbols as well as a green symbol of a foot on a brake and the word BRAKE flashing. I checked the codes again, there are 2 codes for P0864. One of them says it is a Pending code.
Expert:  Wolfgang replied 5 months ago.

let me get the last of the fuse layout. this will take a bit!!
