Volkswagen Beetle: 98 vw beetle 2.0 .... heavy misfire on #2

98 vw beetle 2.0 .... heavy misfire on #2 cylinder. replaced coil pack, plugs, wires and #2 fuel injector. no help. #2 cylinder compression is 190... any thoughts?

i checked the injector with the noid and it flashes. but not the coil...i go do that now

the coil is putting out spark on #2

so the noid light id flsshing on the number 2 coil, and on the 2 injecor?

its flashing at the injector. i only checked for spark at #2 on coil.

also, i pulled the valve cover to check for a broken spring, but how do i tell if one is broken? the caps are covering them. I also checked timing at tdc by the cam marks and the flywheel marks.... they are way off.

i smoked #2 cylinder with it at tdc.... no smoke coming from #2 valve positions...

once i set it at tdc on #1 the cam is on the mark, but the flywheel mark is way off

then the timing belt has slipped, have you checked compression on all 4 cylinders?

yep. all 4 cylinders are reading between 190-210

you still need to align the timing belt, it has obviously slipped, if the marks do not line up, how many miles on this?

theres only 72k on it but very very poorly maintained by owner. He has the timing belt kit on order

what about carbon build up on the valves?

carbon build up wouldd show on the compression test, the problem is going to lie in the timing belt, the marks have to line up perfectly, so this need to be adressed before anything else,Tim

sounds good, but wouldnt a leakdown test comfirm carbon build up? or is that pretty much what the smoke test did?

the smoke test would show the same thing, if the valves were leaking, get the timing in order and it should fix it,Tim
