the oils sensor was out and someones started the 94 golf. it spewed oil everywhere. replaced oil now engin will crank but not start

Are you talking the sensor above the oil filter area, or the low pressure switch on the end of the head? it's possible that oil may have seeped into the distributor cap, or other connectors, and is causing the issue.

I would make sure that you have fuel pump operation (pressure to the rail) and then do a spark test. If no spark, check inside the distributor cap, clean out the connectors on the distributor and the coil and apply dielectric grease to keep moisture or other liquids out.
