Customer Question

Hello VW guys and gals. I have 2 vw's with the same problem.. both 1.8T of course. One is a 2000 passat, the other a 2003 beetle. 156k and 138k miles. The oil light comes on and system chimes when oil gets hot. I had the pan off of the passat about 20k ago and cleaned the pickup and pan, it wasn't sludgy to begin with, but the pickup was not so clean. that car has had syn oil since then. The beetle has over 20 psi oil pressure when hot at idle, i measured it. I would think that would be enough to keep it happy, but yet it's not so happy. Short of getting a gun and shooting them, what can i do? Thanks jack

Welcome to Just Answer!!!

You need to drop the pan on both of them more then likely the pick up screen on the passat is clogged again you only cleaned the pick up tube you need to replace it and also replace the breather hoses under the intake manifold these break down and cause the issue where they clog the screen again . On th beetle do the same thing but no need to replace the hoses just the oil pick up tube. I hope this helps.

Feedback and bonuses are greatly appreciated this is the only way i get compensated for my time and knowledge thank you !!

oh boy, I can't wait to tear off the two pans. Seem to me they do come off fairly easily though. Bad breather hoses could also have something to do with why the Passat doesn't have enough vacuum for the brake booster on cold start. They want a lot of dough for those hoses. Sorry i am late to respond, i w as putting out the other "fires". Next question for new money--------------03 Golf GTI 1.8T. A/c compressor is not getting power to turn on. System has enough freon in it. Fuses related to system are all good. I see some computor action and square wave going on here and i don't have a VW scanner. Is there a common problem for these? Thanks jack

Ok provide direct power to each fan from the battery to the connector do both fans come on hi and low speed ?

Customer replied344 days and 21 hours ago.

won't see car again for a couple days. I could pay now but don't see accept box. should I go up to "add bonus"? thanks jack

Just do it later when you see the car

Customer replied343 days and 2 hours ago.

the pan is off of the beetle and it is spotless including the pickup. The pan has an external sensor on the bottom (for level I think) but there is no wire for it. Is it supposed to be wired or did someone swap pans or engines? The car showed over 20 psi oil pressure at idle when hot yet still flashes and chimes stop engine now. your thoughts.

20 psi was that at cold start idle?

Customer replied343 days and 1 hours ago.

no, thats hot idle. we've got the in/op air cond gti in here too. we are checking cooling fans for high and low with direct wiring. right fan works on high and low. left fan does not work.

You have to make sure the fans work first if it does not work then replace it without the fans working then the ac will also not work . On the oil pressure issue that's too low if the screen is clean then I would check for top end sludge it may be a oil pump issue because that's low .

20 lbs hot at idle is low? our new fan is on the way. will the a/c come to life or is there a module we might have fried? thanks Jack

The ac should work if the fan works with it , you should be looking at about almost 40 psi when the car is hot for oil pressure it seems low at 20 psi

Customer replied342 days and 22 hours ago.

took a look at the engine type number on the beetle and saw fresh grinding marks. did the chain drive oil pump come before or after the shaft drive one? Thanks

1998 -2003 are chain driven pumps

Customer replied342 days and 22 hours ago.

new fan is in and a/c is still inoperative. fans still not coming on when a/c is commanded. next? I ordered a new ebay oil pump for the beetle, $98 w/pickup. we'll see. thanks a bunch, please stay with me.

Have you checked the fan control module and does the new fan power up when power and ground is supplied to it directly ?

Customer replied342 days and 6 hours ago.

the fans come on with engine temp to cool the motor correctly.

Am asking if they come on high speed when the ac is turned on??

Customer replied342 days and 3 hours ago.

we swapped the beetle fan control module into the GTI and all is fine with the world now. I ordered a new module off ebay for $29.50 free shipping. beat that!! Thanks for your help, 1 down two with low oil pressure to go. Thanks again jack
