Hello. I have a 2001 VW Passat B5. It has only 67,000 miles. Lately it has been consuming oil at a rapid rate. At my last oil change (4000 miles) the dipstick registered just a hair below low. I put 4+ quarts of synthetic oil and the oversize Fram filter. After 3000 miles it registered low (bottom mark on the dipstick). I added another quart. After another 1000 miles that quart was consumed, and it's low again. I've taken it to mechanic. No apparent leaks. No white or blue smoke from the tailpipe. He said it may be do to a faulty seal in the engine. Any thoughts? Please reply directly XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX. Thanks in advance!James

Welcome to Just Answer!!!Will try our hardest to help you out here , has a compression and cylinder leakage test been done yet ??
Hi, Thanks for your suggestion and reply. No compression and cylinder leakage test yet . My mechanic didn't even put it up on the lift yet.Should I consider selling the car or trading it in? Everything else is in good shape.Control arms, axle, transmission, exhaust, etc. I paid only 4800 for it last year with 58000 miles from a mechanic who was a friend of a friend.Could it be the oil plug? thanks,Jamie
The oil plug will not cause the issue i recommend you have these test done if the results will not pass the specs then more then likely you have issue with the piston rings and will need a rebuild and will cost some good amount of money it is up to you if you want to sell the vehicle depending on how much money you choose to put in to the vehicle if you need piston rings you will be looking at about $1800. I hope this helps.Your feedback and bonuses are appreciated thank you !
Does this help???
I'm going to follow up with another mechanic. If this checks out I will accept the answer.
