Customer Question

I have a 2008 GTI with bi-xenon headlights which double as DRL. Would like to install philips 12820WLEDX1 LEDS to use as DRL. Can this be done? Which wire gets connected to the new LEDs. The LED is powered direct from battery. Mounting location proving to be more difficult than I thought. LED is 4"x1". A local shop has vag-com.

Country: United States
Make: Volkswagen
Model: GTI
Year: 2008

Already Tried:
Purchased the LEDs. Spoke to local dealer, no help in regard to being able to do this for me or who might be able to, but willing to charge me 100.00 to turn off DRL.

Hello there! I'm Eurocar ! I will try to assist you as much as I can. Quality research = Quality answer!!

the problem with DRL with xenons is that the xenons is on all the time so to turn them off you do not have DRL anymore

there is a way to turn off the drl and the lights will come on when the headlamp switch is turned on but a VAG COM is needed to recode the system

the led's needs to be hardwired separately with a switch

technically it is illegal to turn off the drl's by the dealer!!

if you really want the led's major wiring and creativity is needed!!

want to give you the scoop!!!

Online I have read where the vag-com gives choice to have fog lights be the DRL, which may be an option. But I would like to have the LED as DRL, especially as I already bought them. Or as I understand you, have drl turned off and hard wire the leds. The leds are 4x1", any suggestion where they could be mounted if this can be a viable option. Wiring the led could be expensive ?

i do know that. it can be mounted behind the grille but anything outside can be gauty!!!

it all depends you have to tag in the fog light for drl if you decide to change but fogs and leds at the same time may draw too much attention especially if all lights on !!

illegal to have fogs , high beams, and the led drl on the same time

max lights is 4

I dont want fog and led at same time. It would be nice to be able to use fog lights if needed. Mounting behind grill, I didn't think of that, may be viable. The leds need 13 volts, doesn't list amperage needed, doubt if is much. If I use the leds, how /where do I connect so they come on when parking brake is released?

See that is the hard part now due to the body control module it senses when a wrong amperage reading or a bulb out and the light indicator comes on in the dash. So hooking to the lighting system is out of the question. You need to make a manual switch and harness with a fuse to make this happen. That is the only way. If not done right you may have an electrical fire

Thank you. So I must decide which way to go. Are there other choices for replacement fog light bulbs when these burnout, if I decide to go the easy way and just make the fog lights my DRL

I would recommend the fog light method much easier and less intrusive
Less problems

I will probably go with the fog lights to b the drl. R the bulbs difficult to replace, is there a choice for bulb longevity, color and the beam pattern

the bulbs are easy to replace . just look for the bulbs that fit the fog lights and sensor safe that will not trip the bulb out light

then code the module for the fog light as the drl
