Customer Question

I have a 2002 Jetta with 1.T engine and auto tranny Tiptronic. Just picked up car. Previous owner had problems with shifting and took it to shop. shop "rebuilt" tranny. Still shifts erratic. found fault code 01045 Tiptronic switch f189 cleared code and drove same problem but no code came back.

Welcome to Just Answer!!!
The tiptronic switch is build into the shifter tongue this will not cause the Trans to shift this way , these transmissions are not recommended to be rebuild by Vw because they end up the same or worse you may have a Trans module issue wich are common just make sure the Trans was rebuild with Vw parts and a qualified Vw technician and shop because these are really hard to rebuild very uncommon to come out right usually needs a new Trans with Trans module re flash done after Trans replacement . I hope this helps .

Not sure of how it was rebuilt. Most rebuilds on these things run about what this guy paid, The car has low miles and is very clean but I found it strange that the plastic cover at the base of shift levle is busted and open to the shift box below. I have heard that if something gets in there it can screw stuff up like the magnets or other stuff. Any truth to this ? Also to clarify, you are saying that the tiptronic switch does not affect the way it shifts? Its more jerky and kinda pops into first 3 gears( not a smooth transition) Also this is after you drive it 3 or 4 miles and its warnmed up. Its better when u r first running it

The cover with the shifter strip damaged that's where the tiptronic switch is located in the rubber shifter part if damaged replace it .yes the tiptronic code will not effect shifting more then likely you need a new trans these are real common to fail also have the software level checked in the trans module to make sure it if up to date .i hope this helps .
