2001 Jetta: shift..1 to 2 if done manually , Oil..pan and filter

What are the main causes for a 2001 Jetta to not shift into 3 and 4. only seem to change from 1 to 2 if done manually , Oil , pan and filter has been removed , oil is dirty.

ok, so I'm curious if you've had the transmission control module scanned for fault codes

VWDoc :

I'll go through a few common issues

VWDoc :

First off, I don't necessarily think a fluid and filter change will help in this case.

VWDoc :

But with the pan off currently, I suggest taking a very close look at the conductor strip that's connected to the series of solenoids

VWDoc :

I've seen this strip develop breaks in the area where it comes out of the front of the transmission

VWDoc :

but if you can get a scan done and report the fault codes to me, I can likely help further
