16955 Implausible Brake Signal, have checked everything nothing

Customer Question

16955 Implausible Brake Signal, have checked everything nothing have VAG-COM
Submitted: 4 years ago.

Have you checked the brake light switch?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Yes, switch has been replaced with green switch by dealer. I personally took it apart and checked it out internally. Like new inside and functions correctly. Before that bought another one and installed it. Same problem.
Expert:  Jeremiah Mahler replied 4 years ago.
If you disconnect the electrical connection to the brake light switch do the brake lights go out? I just want to be 100% sure the brake light switch is not at all involved.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
This is the brake light on the dash, not the rear lights. It beeps because it thinks there is an error somewhere. I have checked the brake fluid level and sensor, I have check the E brake switch with a VOM(good), brake pedal activates the release for the automatic shifter, tail lights are not on with the brake off, on when the brake is on, 3rd brake light works properly also.
Expert:  Jeremiah Mahler replied 4 years ago.
OK, brake lights are working, it is the brake warning light in the dash.

I see you have code 16955 presumably from the ECM.
I would scan all modules using your VAG-COM. ECM, ABS, Instrument Cluster, etc
and post back what you find.

Also, if you disconnect the brake fluid level sensor does it make the warning light go off?

OK, only 1 code is stored and it is related to the brake switch.

Have you checked all the fuses?

Faulty or incorrect wattage bulbs can cause this problem. But you said you checked these already. Does the light go out when the bulbs are removed?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Haven't checked that yet. Should the brake light go out if I take the bulbs out?

It likes to throw these codes also.

Of those additional codes make sure the battery is in good condition and charged. And you probably have a bad switch on the driver door. Probably not related to the brake switch problem.

If the light in the dash goes out when you remove the brake bulbs you know it is either the bulbs themselves or the wiring. The brake warning light should not go on when the brake light bulbs are removed.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Brake lights unplugged, brake light still on. Drivers door is kind of hard to shut for some reason, where is the switch located?
Expert:  Jeremiah Mahler replied 4 years ago.
The switch would be the switch on the passenger door to lock/unlock the doors.

Let me dig through the wiring diagrams and see what I can find...
Expert:  Jeremiah Mahler replied 4 years ago.
Inspect the front brake pad thickness.
Are the pads down to the wear sensors?
If not is the wiring to the wear sensors of both front intact and OK?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
The drivers unlock switch is trying to come apart but is together and works if you push in on it. The remote won't unlock the Pas. door if you hit it twice like I thought it was supposed to. I thought you were talking about the switch that tells it if the door is shut. The door is aligned properly it looks like but it won't just close easily the last 2-3", kind of like it's binding on something but there's nothing for it to bind on.
I would like to have the diagram for the brake light switch so I can check voltages there. A diagram for the dash plus, pin outs, would be nice to so I can check voltages there also.

Checked the front pads, brand new. Wiring is good, at least on the Drivers front. That is the only one that has a wire.
Expert:  Jeremiah Mahler replied 4 years ago.
Here are the diagrams related to the brake light switch.
Lots of fuses to check. And you might check the rear marker lights as well.

I've VOM'd all the fuses, good. Horn was blown for some reason, 20A. I'll check the marker lights. Diagrams are odd compared to Chryslers. I'll check it out. Hopefully I can find the problem.

Thanks,

sounds good. Let me know what you find.

Bought Bentley Manual. Wiring diagrams are terrible. Printed off 7 different diagrams to compare and see where the wires went for the brake switch. Finally, one out of 7 diagrams lead the power wire back to the fuse panel to a #ed fuse. Checked fuse. There was no fuse in that location. It is at the top of the fuse panel on the end of the dash, hard to see. Diagram on the fuse card shows a "!" mark, real helpful! Placed a fuse in the socket and it fixed the brake light, no cruise, no temp and a couple of other items. I checked all the other fuses before with the VOM. Problem was there was no fuse there to check and there are several other fuse locations that are not used in the fuse panel. It is hard to tell what is what on these things, very poor documentation.
