First thing, turn off the radio and make sure the key is removed from the ignition (codes may set if it is not).

The batteries are packed in there really tight on the beetles.
The plastic housing towards the engine must be removed.
They clip in place at the bottom and may have a 10mm bolt.
There is a clamp towards the front bottom of the battery that is removed with a 13 mm socket.
Disconnect the battery cables (negative first).
To remove the battery it must be tilted nearly vertical on its side.
Remove the battery quickly to prevent any spilling of internal liquid.
Installation is reverse of removal.

When powering things up after installing the battery make sure the radio is off then turn on the key, then turn on the radio. If this is done you should not have to enter the radio code.
