what carborator or carborators do you have?

The backfiring is probably not due to the carborator. You need to adjust the valves and set the timing first. The carb adjustment is simple. The large screw on the left side of the carb is the idle speed adjustment. The small screw underneath the idle screw is the air mixture. Get the idle close and then screw in the air mixture until it starts cutting out. Then back it out 1 1/2 rounds.
