99 golf: mk4..1.6 se and the speedo has stopped working..speed sensor

i have a 99 golf mk4 1.6 se and the speedo has stopped working, was wondering is it a fault with the speed sensor? and if so where is it located?

Its probally not the sensor but more likely the drive gear. Now on the rear of the trans, just above the right (Passenger) side axle out put shaft is the speed sensor, there is a three wire conector. Remove the sensor and then remove the drive gear it is a long plastic gear that goes into the trans. This drive gear we have seen break and cause a no speedo. Now if you remove the gear and it is ok, then using a drill, attach the bottom part of the gear to the drill and then conect the wires to it, using the drill see if the speedo works, if so then the problem is with the final drive speedo gear, we have also seen a few of these break. If the final drive gear breaks you will need to have the final drive removed and have a new gear installed on the final drive. The gear is also plastic and when the break will fall off or just spin on the final drive.
