1998 passat: is leaking oil just above the oil filter..assembly

my 1998 passat is leaking oil just above the oil filter. there is an assembly with two hoses coming out of it and it is leaking badly there, but not from the hose. what is it?

That is the oil cooler, there is a seal above there that is available from your local dealership. You simply remove the filter and there's a large nut that holds that cooler on, I believe it's like a 26 mm. Remove the nut and you can pull the cooler down and replace the seal.
