Can all this be done from the top or do you do this from the bottom?

It may be a little bit of both. To remove the bracket, the bolts towards the bottom may need to be removed (depending on how far you will need to remove them). FOr this, you may have to go underneath.

what tools do you need specifically?

Can you please give me step by step insturctions to remove alternator? What has to come off first and then second and what's next? I'm trying to tell my son inlaw how to do this over the phone. He is used to working on Toyota Camry.

I tell you what... I do not have step by step instructions to remove the alternator.
