Where is the starter located in a 99 VW passat 1.8? and how can i get to it..

The starter is located on the right side of the engine right behind the motor mount. To remove the starter would require you to lift the vehicle either on a lift or jackstands. You would need to remove the lower plastic shield. You need to disconect the battery before you begin work. Once up on stands you can remove the lower shield to access the starter. Remove starter cables, and on some a large clamp on the outside of the starter. One bolt comes out from the front, while the top bolt comes out through the back of the bell housing. You will need to lower the A/C Compressor down, you can remove the belt and there are three bolts holding it on, unplug the wire, and just let it hang by the lines. This will give you enough room to remove the starter
