Customer Question

I have a '99 S70 Volvo. The pcv system is not working as there is a lot of pressure in the crankcase. I cleaned the breather box and it seems to be worse. What's next?

Hi Vern,

Any engine that has higher crankcase pressure that the PCV system can't manage has higher blowby (worn piston rings) than acceptable.

How many miles on this engine?

I would perform a cylinder leakdown test.

Above 20% would be unacceptable. Generally 2-6% is healthy.

There is no fix for high blowby other than rebuilding the engine.
