Customer Question

Just purchased '99 v70. Still trying to figure out the ignition mechanism. Sometimes when I take the key out at the 0 position, I get a chime when I open the door. Other times, I take the key out and the chime does not go off, feal like when this happens, they key turns a little further for a "clean pull". Can't figure out what I am doing differently when this happens.

volvoexpert1 : Hello! The chime switch is part of the electrical ignition switch, which is screwed to the left side of the column, inline with the lock cylinder. The chime switch has a spring loaded button to return it to the chime off position when the key Is removed. The column lock also has a spring loaded plunger to operate the chime switch. From what you are describing, it sounds like the column lock mechanism has some wear in it causing the plunger to hang up at times. This year and model does not have many problems with the column lock failing, so you might try pushing open the surrer and spraying in a teflon based spray such as Tri-Flo or another lock lubricant. Just be aware there is always the possibility that the mechanism is failing, and sometimes applying lubricant hastens the process!
