Customer Question

Every couple of weeks my 2000 volvo s70 will not start. All the interior lights come on (ie, there is power), but the car will not turn over. the past two times this has occurred, a trip on the tow truck was enough to have the car restart leading me to think its the starter. Is there a way I can quick-fix this for a bit without replacing the starter?

Jim B :

Welcome , The problem is that it happens every couple of weeks which can make it hard to "catch in the act" . BUT if the starter is the problem there is no quick fix you will need to replace the unit. When it will not crank have you tried putting it in neutral .. Sometimes the gear selector switch can wear and not let the signal flow to the starter. The only way to be sure is to monitor the signal wire at the starter by hooking up a volt meter. If you have a signal and the starter is not cranking you found the problem.

Customer :

i will try to put it in neutral but I do believe i have tried that before with no results, though I'm not sure. thank you for your help.

Customer :

i tried that with no results. is there a way i can simulate the bouncing of a tow truck to try and get the starter to kick over?
