volvoexpert1 : Hello! The first pace to check for this is fortunately also the easiest. Under the hood, on the firewall, passenger side, there are 2 plastic vacuum lines connected to nipples on the firewall thru rubber elbows and inline vacuum check valves. By now the rubber elbows may have rotten and broken. They got disturbed when the evaporator was replaced, so it wouldn't be surprising if that's where the problem is. Please Let me know if this isn't it so I can continue to help diagnose this with you before rating my answer.
Customer :

It is hard to tell at night. I did see three hoses in that area right above where the air conditioning pipe runs into the fire wall. I can't tell the condition yet, but are replaceable with standard vacuum hosing or are they special parts that I need to order?

volvoexpert1 : It would fit best to use the factory elbows, but if you dont mind making longer hose runs, regular vacuum hose could be used.
Customer :

Why would the system fail only occasionally? Before the repairs the same thing happened, but then everything worked fine the following day. Is there some way to test it to see if it is at those elbows? Also, the condenser was replaced over a week and a half ago, and there were no issues until yesterday.

volvoexpert1 : Ok this is new information for me, as I read the original question it appeared the problem just started. Still , the first step is to check the elbows for breakage. If you don't have a relible connection to vacuum, the system can't work. Before the condenser the same thing happened. How often does it happen, and when does it start working again? Redrafting engine? Sitting overnight, etc? Does it fail in the middle of a trip somewhere, or has it already failed at the beginning of the trip?
Customer :

It was working all day yesterday. (I did get my oil changed at the dealer, but it still worked after that). The only difference is that I did several short trips to restaurant and then to the store. It stopped working when I left the store. It has started up the following day in the past. I will try it this morning to see if it starts up again.

Customer :

Replaced the two outer elbows (the dealer did not have one with the small diameter in the middle). They said the old ones looked OK. I can here the vacuum system when I first start the car. The vents work OK for about 30 seconds and then they shut down. I did it twice and it did the same thing.

volvoexpert1 : Ah! This sounds like a problem with the solenoid vacuum controller valve for the A/C vents, located in the dash behind the glove box, just to the left of the evaporator housing cover. It is a small metal and plastic box with a green electrical plug and a cluster of vinyl vacuum tubes in a single rubber connector thet run to the various vents. The solenoid valve does go bad occasionally, usually it's a cracked internal solder joint that causes the problem. You can see this part by removing the glove box and looking down and to the left. The glove box comes out by removing one screw on each side inside the box, then prying on the top to pop it loose, and pulling the box out. ......( Another common problem with losing the airflow from the dash vents on this car is a leaking vacuum bellows, but this would show up only when accelerating especially up a hill, because this reduces the available engine vacuum. If this were the problem however, the vents would resume blowing when you lift your foot off the accelerator)
