Customer Question

My 2000 Volvo S70 engine runs up to 110 degrees and then cools down quickly to 89 degrees. It get's very hot when idling. I checked cooling fan today and is was not on when engine was 110%. The fan was runnning when engine is turned off however I don't think it's working at all. What do you think issue is?

Philip : Any check engine lights? It could be a few different issues. When you say 110degrees where do you get that value? Operating temp is around 180 degrees. Usually the thermostat goes bad along with the engine temp sensor. Does the fan come on when you put the AC on?
Customer :
Philip : ?
Customer :

Yes check engine light is on and off. 110 degree value is coming from temp guage on dashboard. Fan is not on when AC is on. Another thing I noticed was burnt oil smell when it gets hot now. It's never done that before.

Philip : You need to see what fault code is stored. This will assist with fault tracing greatly. You may have an oil leak it's not uncommon. Does the temp gauge go into the red?
Philip : No coolant leaks right?
Customer :

ok, how do I get fault code? Tempt gauge doesn't go in red. No leaks.

Philip : Is the car a turbo? How many miles on it?
Customer :

yes turbo I believe. 179,000 miles

Philip : A standard OBD 2 scanner can read them or just goto autozone they read them for free.
Customer :

ok will do. what is next step after I get code? this is first time I have used service.

Philip : Send me a message with the codes stored and I tell you what you need to do. Simple as that.
Customer :

ok, thanks Philip.

Customer :

Good evening Philip. I have fault code PO422

Philip : If that is the only fault code it is indicating a catalyst low efficency. You will need a cat converter and possible oxygen sensor. But this isn't causing your issues. The temp gauge on the dash is an ambient temp gauge so it really isn't anything important the sensor goes bad causing inaccurate readings. As long as the engine temp guage doesnt go Into the red your good.
Customer :

After having the fault code checked now the CHECK ENGINE light is ON and there is a orange upward ARROW to the left of check engine light that is continously blinking now. The engine seems to be running fine. Is this same issue? If I replace cat converter and oxygen sensor do you think this will take care of problem? Is this somethoing i can do myself? What is level of difficulty and average cost for parts? Thanks for your help.

Philip : The blinking arrow is most likely a faulty winter mode button in your shift panel. But a standar OBD2 cannot read transmission codes a dealer visit to verify what fault is stored may be needed. Well if you change the cat converter and sensor you will fix one of your issues. Unlikely you can do it yourself a lift and possibly a welding torch to get them out. It will prolly run atleast $1200 for this repair at most. But that's not including If you have other trans issues.
Customer :

Thanks again Philip. You have been very helpfull. Have a good weekend.
