Hi there when the check engine lamp flashes mainly means that there is a miss-fire, now there are 2 coils on your can and also some people replace the incorrect coils, also I always recc. new spark plug wires and spark plugs also the Volvo spark plugs work the best for your car. It probably has the other coil is bad.

How hard is it to replace a coil for a mechanical novice? Or best left to the mechanic?

To replace the coil actually is not to hard will take probably less that 1/2 hour, just be very care full around the connectors due to the age and also be careful not to pinch any wires, but the coil is located right under the engine cover that says Volvo and the one next to it that goes over the timing belt.

Now I would codes read out to make sure it is the other coil is indeed the missfire and not the new coil that possibly is bad.
