Customer Question

Hi Can you help me with my year 2000 V40 Volvo 2000 The ABS light on the dash came on and stopped on 3 months ago. I checked all the brakes for leaking fluids and there are none.Brake system working OK and has since gone through an MOT
Reading through the workshop manual they suggest that its probably a sensor or module at fault. Could you confirm what you think.
At the same time that the ABS light came on the speedometer would take a couple of minutes before it kicked in and started to work. Over the last couple of months it has taken at least 5 miles before it starts to work. I has now finally packed in altogether and will not work.
Again I understand this could be a sensor or a module as it is not cable driven.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated Colin

volvoexpert1 : Hello! The ABS light being on is an unusual occurance for this car. Since you've already inspected the wiring to the front wheelspeed sensors and found no fault, the ABS codes are going to have to be read off before the cause can be determined. Typically only a shop with Volvo VIDA diagnostics can read the ABS codes. One thing you can do is make sure the front wheel bearings are fully seated in the steering knuckle on both sides to the same depth. if a wheel bearing starts sliding out of poison. Or the axle nut is loose allowing the axle to move laterally, the sensor cannot read the wheel speed.
Customer :

Thankyou I will try that but what about the speedo, is that connected to the ABS system and if not what can I do about it as I dont want to be caught driving over the specified limit.

volvoexpert1 : Ah yes, the speed signal comes from the ABS module, so whatever is causing the ABS light to come on is in all likelihood also causing the speedometer it to work.

Please can you tell me if I buy a second hand ABS module does it have to be coded before it is fitted into my car.

Customer replied 344 days and 9 hours ago.

Relist: Other.
I need to know now before I purchase an ABS module I have been offered.

I think it is premature to replace the ABS module for this. Please re-read my first entry (position NOT poison! Sorry for the typo) and get the ABS codes read out and/or a thorough inspection of front wheel bearing position in the hub and all 4 wheel speed sensors for magnetic debris or physical damage.

Customer replied 344 days and 8 hours ago.

I do understand that but when I spoke to the garage who would do the job he did say that if the ABS module needed to be replaced if it was coded he was unable to do the job, so as I was pleased with your answer I thought I would ask . Can you take any ABS module and fit it straight onto the car?

I am in flight and can't get that information today unfortunately. I can check for you tomorrow. If I forget, post to ask again please.i will say that this model is not highly networked like the newer bigger Volvoes, so there's a chance a used unit would plug right in and work. Meanwhile, the module I recommend is having yours remanufactured by a company at Xemodex.com for $149 plus shipping etc. this is an economical way and let's you keep you software so there is no worry.

You should be able to use the module from any 2000-2002 S or V40. There is no software to load. Please post back to this question directly with any follow ups on the problem.
