My gear shift is locked and won't move, there is a shift lock button and when I press that the gear shift moves back and forth, but when I put it back in park it locks up again, also my brake lights stayed on for a while, also my DSA light came on before this started and I thought because the streets were a little wet, so I didn't think much of it because it has come on once or twice before, can you let me know what you think the problem is?
Optional Information: 2004 Volvo S40 Already Tried: just pressing the shift lock release button, but most serivce repair shops are closed on Saturdays and I would prefer to take it to a service repair shop that specializes in Volvo repair.
year/model/engine, please?
I did not receive your question. please resubmit your question to me. Thanks.
Nevermind. I inquired about your year and model, but I see that information now.

Can this really lock up my gear shift like that?
If the brake light switch circuit does not close, then the brake lights will malfunction and the shift interlock will not release the shifter
okay, just one more question do you think it is safe for me to drive it, just to get it to the repair shop on Monday morning or do you think I should have it towed there? Thank you.
No problem. No need to accept until you're comfortable with the answer. If the brake light switch isn't working, then your brake lights may not function. And you may still have the issue with the shift interlock not working properly. However, the car should be safe to drive.
However, yes, best to get it fixed sooner rather than later.
