Customer Question

D810 with 300mmf/4D. fEE on all mode settings. Woks ok with 105mm micro lens
JA: What's the make/model of your device? How old is it?
Customer: About 8 years(?); AF-S 300mm f/4D IF-ED
JA: How long has this been going on? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Since yesterday. Cleaned contacts. Locking ring rotated a few times & reset to f32 with 2 orange spots.
JA: Anything else you want the electronics expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: That's it. Thanks.

Hi. My name is*****'m a camera repair technician with almost 30 years in the business and I'll be glad to help you with your question today.

If the problem isn't that the lens aperture isn't set to the minimum, it may need some hands on diagnosis. Is there a camera shop nearby?

One other question. Is the 105mm lens a DX lens or direct drive?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
to camera shop.
Both the 105mm & the 300mm are AF-S & DX.

That means there is something electronically wrong with the 300. Your local shop can probably verify this for you but, since it is Nikon, it will probably need to go to one of their authorized repair centers. Parts replacement like this usually requires reprogramming with software only their shops have.

There's only one authorized Nikon repair shop in town and their place looks like they test hand grenades as a side-job.
Anyway, I'll give it a go.
Thanks for your help,
Neville.

Hi Neville.

Wish I could do more to help but this is one of those things that can't be repaired over the internet.
