I bought a D7100 about a year ago and just started using it.

Customer Question

I bought a D7100 about a year ago and just started using it. I also have a coolpix 610. On my 610, I can enlarge fotos in the camera. I have not seen a similar capability for my 55-300mm, f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR. Is there any way of retouching to get a bigger image. In other words, I can get bigger images by pressing the value button, but I can't preserve the bigger image. Particularly for bird shots, I would like to get closer.
JA: What's the exact make and model of the camera? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: the camera is a D7100. I bought it last December. It was new.
JA: What happened right before this popped up? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: no troubleshooting. I just want to know if the camera can preserve large images.
JA: Anything else you want the camera expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: not at this time.

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

Is your D7100 a Nikon?

If so, it, not the lens (unless it is a Zoom lens) is where the magnification (otherwise known as 'digital zoom') would take place.

Try using the Quality/Zoom In button on the D7100 (if it is the Nikon brand of D7100.) That may help... though whether that enlarges the resultant picture depends possibly on the lens assembly attached to the Nikon D7100 camera.

The lens you name, the 55-300mm, if it is the Nikkor VR model, is a Zoom lens, BTW. So using Zoom controls on your D7100 should actually zoom subjects e.g. birds.

Does that work? let me know, please. And I will advise you further, as needed.
