Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.

You may need to add more Canon software (than just the driver for the camera) onto your computer.

Given that your computer is a Windows PC, what is its System Type? either 32-bit or 64-bit, which info is found in
Start - Control Panel - System and Security - System .

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
It is 64 bit
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

OK.

Try this please, before I advise you further:

Go to

Start

Computer

about 20 seconds or longer after you plug the camera up to the computer through its USB port with a USB cable. Does the camera show there as an entry or an icon?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I currently don't have a canon driver on the computer where can I get one
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I thought the adobe software would be all I need
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

OK... the answer to that is simply, here:

http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_400d.aspx?type=drivers&language=EN&os=Windows%2010%20(64-bit)

but there's no driver listed there for Win 10 x64-bit.

Software is here:

http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_400d.aspx?type=download&language=EN&os=Windows%2010%20(64-bit)

Your computer is supposed to recognize and interface with your XTi / 400D just fine, with no driver download. That's what Canon's site says.

Try this please, before I advise you further:

Go to

Start

Computer

about 20 seconds or longer after you plug the camera up to the computer through its USB port with a USB cable. Does the camera show there as an entry or an icon?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
When you say go to start computer where is that?
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

The START button at lower left of the computer screen - click on it once.

Then click on

COMPUTER

in the menu that appears.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Ok when I click on the windows tile icon in button left corner (there is no start button) the windows tiles and apps come up there is no menu with the word computer in it
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

How about 'My Computer' ... oh right, on Windows 10 they changed the name to

ThisPC

...try looking for that tile and clicking on it, please.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I can't find it. There is no tile like that and it's not listed in the apps
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

Look for Windows Explorer then.

When it opens, go to

ThisPC.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Ok found this pc
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
When I hook up the camara USB after 20 seconds nothing happens
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Also you said something about a model camara 400d. My camara is just a canon eos digital rebel xti
On the bottom of the camara it says Canon DS126151 if that helps
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

The XTi and the 400D are different designations for the same Canon camera, in different nations.

The XTi page cannot be found at Canon's site... at least not at present, and not by me.

I'm sorry to hear that your camera is not recognized, apparently, by the computer.

Was it, before this?

Also, after connecting your camera, and try a different USB port this time... look in Device Manager, for the camera under 'Imaging Devices' or 'Cameras'.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I looked in device manager and it's not there
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

Try a different USB port this time.

Also, you might need a different USB cable, for the computer to recognize or react to the camera, when it is connected for longer than 20 seconds at a time.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Ok I have tried every USB port and I don't have another USB cable that has the camara adapter on the other end
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

If the USB cable you have is not perfectly new, then... how old is the camera?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
The camara and USB cable work on my wife's mac computer fine. They just are not working on my laptop. This does not seem to be getting resolved here and I have to go. Is there anyway I can get my money back
Expert:  Russell H. replied 4 months ago.

I think that you can apply to Customer Service for a refund, if you wish.
