I got the lens error/restart camera msg for my camera & lens

Customer Question

I got the lens error/restart camera msg for my camera & lens makes grinding sound as it tries to pop out. Isn't resolved. What to do?
JA: What's the exact make and model of the camera? And can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: At least 5 yrs old. It's a Canon PowerShot 4000IS.
JA: What happened right before this popped up? What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: I use it to take photos for real estate and a consignment shop I own, so I had it with me in a cloth-sided basket I carry back and forth to work. It's always in its cloth sleeve, which came w/it. I've never had an issue before, but today I do.
JA: Anything else you want the camera expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: Is it fixable? I really like this camera and don't want to buy another.

Hello and thank you for your question. I look forward to assisting you today. Check around the lens barrel to see if it looks evenly seated inside the camera body and let me know please.

but only slightly

Okay thank you. Power on the camera and as the lens tries to extend, gently grab the edge of the lens at equal distances with your fingers and pull it out. That may help to realign the barrel.

Were you able to try my suggestion?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I couldn't get the lens barrel to budge. Both a friend and my tech-savvy son looked at the camera, and they have both decided it is toast. Thanks for attempting to help.

Well it happens unfortunately. Don't forget to remove your SD card before you trash the camera. It was nice working with you!
