i have a D7100 and in the ISO-Auto area on the screen on top of the camera it says For and no matter what i do in the menu i cannot get rid of it and so cannot use the camera

The "For" stands for "Format". You need to format the memory card. This is best done through the cameras menu system. If you highlight the tools section, (the one with the wrench), you will see the format option. Simply select this option and format the caed in the camera.
