Panasonic, Lumix DCM S-1....had it for years and love

Customer Question

Panasonic, Lumix DCM S-1....had it for years and love it...all of the sudden while taking pictures yesterday a 'system error (zoom) message' popped up...lens will not retract. It's frozen
JA: How long has this been going on?
Customer: Just started yesterday....was in the middle of taking pictures....first and only time it's happened after 10+ years
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: nothing other than turning it on and off
JA: The camera expert can solve this for you. Anything else you want him to know before I connect you two?
Customer: Lens fails to retract (as usual) when turned off...stays extended all the thime time

Hi. My name is*****'m a camera repair technician with almost 30 years in the business and I'll be glad to help you with your question today.

The lens assemblies on these cameras are actually quite complicated with several possibilities that can produce the malfunction you describe. The most common is a damaged flexible ribbon cable that is designed to "bend" as the lens extends. Unfortunately, they will only bend so many times before they crack and produce an error. The only real cure is to replace the lens assembly which will require attention by a qualified technician. You may want to check locally for a camera repair shop in your area, or, if you need assistance finding a shop, please letme know and I'll locate one for you.
