Hello and welcome to JustAnswer, I look forward to assisting you today. Has the camera been damaged that you are aware of?

Okay try this. Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button. The camera will try to autofocus while the lens is attempting to retract.

If my first suggestion doesn't work then try this. Power cycle the camera and each time you turn it off, gently wiggle the lens side to side and try pushing it back into the body of the camera. That might realign the lens. If it retracts fully, power cycle the camera a few times to see if the lens functions properly.

Hi Stuart. My name is*****'m a camera repair technician with almost 30 years in the business and I'll be glad to help you with your question today.

The lens assemblies on these cameras are actually quite complicated with several possibilities that can produce the malfunction you describe. The most common is a damaged flexible ribbon cable that is designed to "bend" as the lens extends. Unfortunately, they will only bend so many times before they crack and produce an error. The only real cure is to replace the lens assembly which will require attention by a qualified technician. You may want to check locally for a camera repair shop in your area, or, if you need assistance finding a shop, please let me know and I'll locate one for you.
