Customer Question

I have a new d7200 I just got a couple of days ago, I love the camera but all of a sudden in the view finder at the lower right corner where it tells you how many pictures you have on your chip I see a message when I try to take a picture r42. what does that mean?

Hello and thank you for your question. I look forward to assisting you today. Does it allow you to take the picture?

From my research I found this is the number of pictures remaining in the memory buffer of the camera. This is just a temporary holding area the pictures are stored in until they can be written to the SD card. The r stands for remaining, so when you see the display of r42, that means you have a capacity of 42 pictures that can be stored in the buffer to be written to the SD card.
