Customer Question

Our Canon powershot sx50HS makes an electrical sound and smell every time we take a picture. It doesn't matter whether the flash is on or off. The smelll and sound come from the flash area. Have you heard of this before? Does it sound fixable?

Hi, thank you for contacting My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. The flash in this model is apparently a pop-up flash. Have you tried it with the flash popped up, as well as with it down?Does the flash still fire, at all? or is it dark? when it is popped up, does the bulb look dark or discolored or otherwise odd? What you describe *could* be a defect in the charging circuitry, that builds up a voltage high enough for the flash to fire brightly. Maybe it is making sparks and arcs... in which case, your camera is a slight fire hazard, eventually. It would be good and cautious to send it off for Canon repairs fairly soon, for safety reasons.1-800-OK-CANON is the Canon customer service # ***** could call, or you could initiate repairs online. (And, if your camera is less than 1 year old and has been well-treated in the following terms, it is eligible for free-of-charge warranty-covered repair-servicing.) How old is the camera? in months or years since you bought it. Has the camera been dropped or otherwise subjected to mechanical shock(s) in its lifetime?Has the camera been operated in or subjected to, temperatures below 32 degrees F (freezing point) or above about 100 degrees F ?Has it ever been subjected to a humidity higher than 85 % or gotten wet ?Has the camera been operated in a gritty or sandy environment, such as a beach, a seaside, a construction site, or the like?
