When opening a NEF file from my D5200 in Capture NX2, the file is low resolution at 5 mb and is unusable. I can open the same file in View NX2 and it appears to be fine, but will not transfer or be open in other programs. Why did Nikon create a RAW format so difficult to use?

Hi my name is ***** ***** it would be my pleasure to help with your issue today. The nx2 software is no longer supported by nikon and had been replaced with nx-d. Try downloading the nx-d software from this link and you should have better results. The nef format is one of the most closely guarded industry secrets in the camera industry. Because the source code for the format isn't publicly available we are sometimes stuck using software that is marginal at best and not usually kept up to date. Here's the link for the download page. You will need to copy and paste it to your browser ad my hyperlink button doesn't appear to be working properly.
