I have a D7100 and while shooting one day I got an Err

Customer Question

I have a D7100 and while shooting one day I got an Err message. I managed to clear it and then reset the camera. But later the same day while shooting in Manual the light meter bar disappeared from the viewfinder and the camera started changing the shutter speed on its own as if it was in Apeture priority or Program. After turning the camera on and off and resetting it again. It went away. Today again while in Manual it started behaving as if it was in one of those other modes. I switched the dial to A and took a photo, the camera acted and recorded the photo as if it was in Shutter Priority. On S it acted as if it was on P. Is this problem fixable?

Hello my name is***** do not rate until we are finished. I look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem. How old is it? When on Err how did you clear it? Did it show a number as well?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The camera will be 2 years old in January (2016), but I use it much more than your average hobbyist, as I was working on a 365 project last year and did several portrait sessions.I do not recall seeing a number. I cleared the error by turning it off, switching lenses, turning it back on, and taking a photo.

Ok that is why I asked actually with no number the error means there is an issue with either the lens or the lens contacts on the camera body. The electrical contacts can also cause your new problem. Have you tried cleaning it yet?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I've not tried cleaning them to see if it takes care of the Mode Malfunction I described above. It seems to be a recurring problem without any warning. I can try cleaning them and waiting to see if the mode issue recurrs. What are the cleaning recommendations?

A lint free cloth and either a tiny amount of warm water or alcohol will work. Do not put the lens back on until both are completely dry. Let me know the results when you can.
