What computer are you using to do the update?
Was there a fault with the camera that prompted you to try updating it?
Try a different USB port, and make sure the camera is detected before trying to run the update again, by going to
Start - My Computer
(or in newer Windows PCs, go to 'Computer' - the camera should show up there...)
and seeing whether the camera shows up there. If it doesn't, then the camera or the cable or the USB port has a fault that prevents proper updating.
Also make sure the firmware update is legitimate! if it is for the wrong camera model, or corrupted in transit, or from a dubious source, it might just be unusable.
