This problem may be hardware related - you will need to open the camera and check if the display ribbon cable is still securely connected. If it is, then the firmware on the camera may have become corrupted - the camera will need to be returned to a Canon service center to have the firmware reinstalled.
No it is not expected and may just be an unfortunate coincidence.
The camera can be opened using a jeweller's screwdriver to remove the screws and then use a flat blade to prise the camera's body apart.
