Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question.
The switch for the power may have slipped, internally, so that one position has become the other position. Incidentally, the
_
/
position (normally) also allows the camera to operate... so there's nothing unusual about that.
But if the switch moves one step farther past what is now the
_
/
and the camera still works, that will prove that the internal switch has slipped one step onward.
If that is not the problem, then it is something else that requires disassembly and servicing of the camera, I have no doubt.
But, try removing the batteries, and leaving the camera on a (dry, non-humid, non-dusty) shelf for overnight. Then put the batteries back in and try the camera again.
Let me know what you think, and what you find out.

It will not rotate further left than the / setting. Also, tried the battery removal without sucess. So bummed. Have a wedding in October that I wanted to photography.

I'm sorry to hear that.

You may have to send it to Canon for repair, I think. Their number, in the USA, is 1-800-OK-CANON, and they can also be engaged via website facility at

Good luck.
