My nikon d7100 doesn't focus through the optical viewfinder

Customer Question

My nikon d7100 doesn't focus through the optical viewfinder as well as the lcd live view. I've tried changing all the settings but nothing fixes the problem.

Hi,

When you press the shutter button half way, in Auto Focus mode, does it hunt back and forth, attempting to focus or just not move at all?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The lens will move and attempt to auto focus and looks pretty sharp but then when the image is taken it's slightly off focus. I've tried adjusting the diopter but this does not fix the problem.

I am assuming that the resulting photo is out of focus when down loaded to the computer.

If the same thing occurs with more than one lens there is a good possibility that the body has the problem. To get a good reference point, perform a two button reset using the instructions on the attached photo.

The one most likely thing that even experienced photographers miss is that a single small spot or smudge on the lens can cause the problem that you are having. Carefully clean the lens and look for any scratches

Please keep in mind that my diagnosis & solutions provided are directly dependent on the accuracy of your description of the problem. As with any "do it yourself" fixes, success is a "team effort", since I can't see or touch the camera, and relies on the customer's manual dexterity and ability to follow the instructions well.

I've done a two button reset and have cleaned the lens. The image taken through the live view is sharp and clear but when taking pictures through the viewfinder the images are not as clear/sharp.

The diopter may be a little off or have less range than you need. They appear to vary in the different models. Please see the discussion at the link below.
