Customer Question

My Lumix dcm zs-40 is very out of focus around the edges in wide angle mode. This is a new problem.

Hello,
I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.
What lens are you using?
In wide-angle mode, the softness is usually quite noticeable around the edge of the frame. With the macro lenses, it’s less noticeable, because the magnification of the focus point is very small.

Hi Pete,
I really thought that I would be communicating with a technician from Lumix (Panasonic), but I can see from your question about "what lens am I using" that your are not familiar at all with my camera. I am a photographer and I do know about the typical softness with wide angle lenses...you will notice that I mentioned that this is a "new problem". Something went wrong in the camera. Clearly "just answer" is not going to help in any way to resolve my problem and I feel very strongly that I have been taken advantage of with this whole business and would like to know the procedure for getting a complete refund on my deposit.

The "DCM ZS-40" does not exist so I had to make an assumption..
please confirm the model number?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry for the typo; the full description is Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS40.

Ok, so the DMC-ZS40 does indeed have a built-in zoom lens.
Sometimes the softness is not always noticeable, however if you are taking similar shots to previous ones and the edges of the frame are much more out of focus than normal, then it is likely that part of the optics has become loose or misaligned and it will need to be recalibrated.

Thanks Pete. I kind of figured that part and was sort of hoping for a detailed technical response. As I am sure you know, these zoom mechanisms are quite complex and I was hoping to get an answer concerning which part of the mechanism would cause this type of edge focus problem at wide angles only. As I stated in my original question, "this is a new problem", so I pretty much figured that already that something was not functioning correctly. Is there any further insight into this issue that you can offer at this point?
Expert:  Pete replied 1 year ago.
A more detailed response would be rather moot since there isn't much you can do about this problem without the correct equipment.

Ok, thanks Pete. I am sure that you are doing the best you can and I appreciate your time. Can you please direct me on the process of getting a refund on my deposit? After all, telling me my camera is broken is not exactly helpful, since I knew that already. I was hoping that you could give me some technical advice on how to repair it. I was under the assumption that this was part of Panasonic technical service since I was directed here from their website. I am not sure how this is all supposed to work, but I certainly was mislead.

Sorry I could only confirm what you had already suspected.
I am a user of this site, just like you.
To request a refund, you would need to contact customer services.
best,
Pete.
